When
you step on Prokletije the doors of an astonishing ecological treasury will immediately
open in front of you. If you want to get rid or consumer mania and
you have enough adventure some spirit for a close encounter - Prokletije mountains are what you have been
dreaming of.
Montenegrin
Prokletije is just a small part of this special mountain range between Dinaridi and
Sarskih planina (Sars mountains) located in Albania.
The
mountain range, 70km long, rises gradually toward the southwest and northeast from the Zetsko -
Skadarska valley ending up with the highest peaks of Bogicevica and Cakor and
Rugova passes, where the highest crests - Maja jezerce (2694m) in Albanian territory, Djeravica (2656m)
in Serbian and Bogicevica
(2358m) in Montenegrin territory are
located. This powerful high mountain range continues geographyc toward
the north with Nedzinata (2341m), Cakor (2046m), Mokre planine (1932m), Hajle (2403) and Mokra Gora
(2154m).
The strongest and
most intensive glaciation in the Balkans has left the
deepest trails of glacial erosion in the
form of numerous basins in which tens of small glacial lakes have remained. Jovan
Cvijic claimed that nowhere in the Balkans have the glaciers have left such a deep trail
of their erosion as in the Prokletije mountain range. After the Alps, this was the most glacial
mountain in Europe.
The trails of
glacial action activities, as a rare natural treasure, present an extraordinary aesthetic attraction.
None of these natural caprices, the cogged pointed peaks, unreachable crests, deep
glaciers, steep cliffs, numerous springs, have been spoiled by human hands.
The
starting point to explore the Prokletije mountains is Grbaja valley with two mountain
cottages and two picturesque places, Plav and Gusinje, located at the foot of the
mountain. Near Gusinje, there are Ali Pasas springs where, traditionally,
people from Plav gather every year.
