At the crossroads between the East and the West, ancient and mediaeval history, Montenegrin old towns stand as confirmation and valuable monuments of its multicultural heritage. These remains from the past and living habits were ravaged in wars or natural disasters. They are now the shadows of former civilizations which followed each other at territory of today’s Montenegro, from ancient history to modern times. Position of Montenegro and its being close and linked to Mediterranean was crucial for being open to influences of most major civilizations from this area. |
To have access to the sea meant to be center of the world. For these reasons the beginning of urbanism goes back to as early as the V century B.C., since when remains of towns of Budva, Risan, Ulcinj and Medun date back. Architecture in Montenegrin mediaeval states Doclea and Zeta was combination of Byzantine and Rome influence. In period of the Nemanjic dynasty monasteries became centers of spiritual and public life and they were Orthodox. The period of New Era on the Coast was under influence of Venice authorities. From the XV century the construction of palaces, public buildings and sacral facilities started. |
