If you want to spend your summer vacation in the bathing
suits of Adam and Eve, the right address for you is Ulcinj, a town
in the far south of the Montenegrin coast. The long beaches with
fine sand, especially those at the mouth of the
river Bojana,
are the right place for the fresh touch of Mother Nature. This is
certainly the place for passionate people, even if you are not that
young any more. The Ulcinj sky revitalizes you and reminds you of
your younger days in a magical way. “It was only here that we
remembered how life is really beautiful”, claims a middle-aged
German couple who spend all four seasons here. “We are married to
Ada”, they say, having been miraculously rejuvenated for several
decades.
Ulcinj
extends along the sea in the shape of a drawn bow. It is actually
the remains of the former Colhidium or Olcinium. You can discover
its long and dramatic three millennium history. It is one of the
oldest towns along the Adriatic coast. There are many traces of
beautiful stone constructions. Only a few
well-preserved ornaments remain to remind us of the luxurious gothic
and renaissance period. And yet some of the buildings have survived
like the Balsica-tower or the renaissance church-mosque, where the
city museum is located. It is still the dominant example oriental
style today. Two gates, one from the sea and the other from the
land, lead to this cultural treasure.
Velika plaza
(Big beach),
with sand as fine as flour, is 12 km long and extends as far as the
eyes can see. Not very far from the river Bojana, the curious
tourist will find Sasko. It teems with fish, and on its shores are
the remains of the old town of Svac. Well-informed people claim that
it is the most attractive and the biggest “ghost town” in the
Adriatic region. If it is too hot on Ulcinj’s sand, then you can
find shelter in one of the wooden huts on the banks of the river
Bojana. You can see the ancient ways of fishing and taste the good
fish specialties.
