Gospa od
Skrpjela is a picturesque island in front of Perast, with a church
of the same name on it. It is an artificial island created by
bulwark of rocks and by sinking old and seized ships loaded with
rocks. There is a legend that fishermen from Perast found a
miraculous icon of godmother with Christ at a sea crag, which
ended there probably after a shipwreck. Today, the icon is in the
main marble altar, behind which the original crag can be groped.
The custom of throwing rocks into the sea is alive even nowadays.
Every year on July 22, an event called “fasinada”, when local
people throw rocks into the sea, widening the surface of the
island, takes place. The interior of the church is rich in various
valuables and gifts which sailors have been leaving here for
centuries mostly out of superstition.
